Ever dreamt of a vacation in the clouds? Ever wanted to be so high up that you can see the rest of the world from an aerial view in the size of ants? Such dreams are possible only if you are willing to travel to one of the most beautiful places in Bangladesh. The Chittagong Hill Tract is such a place in Bangladesh where you can experience a wide range of extremely diverse culture and scenic beauty.
Sajek valley is situated in Rangamati District in the Chittagong division of Bangladesh. Rangamati is one of the four districts besides Khagrachhari, Bandarban, and Chittagong that make up the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Though Sajek is situated in Rangamati District, it is more easily accessible through Khagrachhari district.
Sajek is an all-weathered tourist spot and a natural paradise in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The beauty of Sajek is amazing and it has attracted visitors and tourist from Bangladesh and abroad for a long time and as a result nature lovers regularly haunt Sajek. A trip to Sajek gives you the rare opportunity to live among the clouds and see a rare sight of the shining sun in some areas along with heavy rainfall in other areas all at the same time as the altitude is so high you can see from horizon to horizon. The stars can be clearly seen in clusters from the helipad at Sajek Valley as the night falls.
Sajek is actually the name of a river which separates Bangladesh from India. The river flows into the Karnafuli River in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The valley is 1800 feet above sea level. Many small rivers flow through the hills among which Kachalon and Machalong are famous. It is one of the biggest unions in Bangladesh.
Sajek is a place you could visit on your own or with your friends or family. It holds such beauty that can be admired with family and with friends. The tourist area is within an army, so safety is not an issue here. The jeep drive through the curvy uphill roads to Sajek from Khagrachhari is an experience that one would like to relive over and over again.
How to get there?
Though Sajek falls under the boundaries of Rangamati District, it is far more accessible from Khagrachhari. It is a better idea to get bus tickets from Dhaka to Khagrachhari, there are many buses available from Mohakhali bus stand or Kolabagan bus stand. The bus will drop you off at Dighinala, Khagrachhari. You can take a little break at Dighinala for some breakfast of light food then rent a “Chander Gari”, a four wheeler jeep with open roof, for about Taka 6000 to Taka 8000. It can seat up to 12 people, so if you are a big group you can easily take one of these and if you are a small group you can share the ride with some other small group. The chander gari will take about 2 – 3 hours to reach Sajek, so just sit back and enjoy the mind bowing mesmerizing beauty of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Do remember to contact the army so that they can provide an escort as there is a slight risk mugging on the way.
Where to stay?
Alright so now you have reached Sajek and your mind is blown by the scenes you just witnessed on your way up there.
There are many amazing cottages available there for accommodation. Hotel Runmoy and Sajek resort are owned by the army and are very well maintained with good facilities. There are many other resorts there, you can just go roaming around and find out where you would like to stay. The resort with the most amazing view is located near Shiv Mondir, each cottage costs about Taka 3000 per night.
The water supply in Sajek is very limited so be very careful about how you use your water. A single truck comes in to Sajek from Khagrachhari each day to supply water to all the resorts.
Where to eat?
Food can be ordered from your cottage and will be served to you at your convenience. There are not too many variety of food there but the food is good and hygienic. You can order chicken curry, Aloo bhorta, vegetables with rice, and eggs with paratha or khichhuri for breakfast.
Activities in Sajek
Enjoy living in the clouds, go around and look at the most mesmerizing scenic beauty you have ever seen. The place is known as the Queen of Hills & Roof of Rangamati for its natural beauty. Marishsham, another beautiful place near the Sajek Valley, is also very well known because its bamboo houses. There is another place near Sajek called Kanlak which is famous for its orange orchard. You can take a long walk up to kanlak where you will experience the true meaning of being inside the clouds. it is as if you can see the entire world from up there. It is the best place to take pictures of the nature and with the nature’s scenic beauty.
Biggest attractions of this place is sitting back, chilling out and witnessing the majestic sunrises & sunsets, the wet afternoons when it suddenly rains, and the simple way of life of the indigenous people. Tourists may even buy products and crafts made by the local people from the indigenous Haats (open flea market).
At night you can take a walk to the helipad of Sajek valley where you will see stars like you have never seen before. The stars are clustered up and shine bright in the night sky. You can also sit back at your cottage balcony and admire the mighty sight of the hilly ridges covered with clouds.
Solar power is the only source of electricity in Sajek, so don’t expect to have air conditioning or television sets installed there. Sajek is only for those people who love nature and want to connect with it to the fullest.
